Michael Gove 2010:
“Rich thick kids do better than poor clever children”
Students form lower working class are:
- More likely to start school unable to read.
- Underperform in National Curriculum Tests.
- In 2012, only 8% of students attending the top 500 state schools for performance, received free school meals. (source: Sutton Trust 2013) compared to 17% nationally.
Perry and Francis (2010):
Social class is the strongest predictor of educational achievement in the UK.
Students from working class are more likely to:
Do a vocational course rather than more academic AS or A level courses.
Internal factors with the school:
- Labelling
- The self fulfilling prophecy
- Pupil Subcultures
- Marketisation and selection policies.
External Factors outside the school:
- Cultural Deprivation
- Material Deprivation
- Cultural Capital
Cultural Deprivation:
Being deficient in the attitudes and values, knowledge, linguistic ability, self-discipline, reason skills or lifestyles necessary to succeed in the education system.
Examples of cultural deprivation:
- Intellectual Development
- Language
- Attitudes and Values
- Parents education
- Working Class Subcultures.
Material Deprivation:
Refers to poverty and a lack of material necessities.
Examples of material deprivation:
- Housing
- Diet and Health
- Financial support and the cost of education
- Fear of debt
Pierre Bourdieu (1984): Cultural capital
- Refers to the knowledge, attitudes, values, language, tastes and abilities of the middle class.
- refers to two further types of capital: educational and economic.
