EVALUATE The View That Global Advnaces In Digital Forms Of Communication Have Has A Postive Impact On Relationships Flashcards
Introduction
Relationships refer to the interconnection between two more more people. This interconnection can be found in many forms such as: intimacy, friendship, colleagues, enemies, family and gaming peers. The following sociologists have shared their view on whether DFOC have had a positive impact on relationships: Ellison et al, Shaw and Grant (2002), Kraut et al and Zhoa (2006).
Paragraph 1: AGAINST
point
Zhoa (2006) argued that relationships that are surfaced through the internet tend to have more of a negative correlation to societies.
Paragraph 1: AGAINST
Evidence
Rebecca Harris 2015 wrote an article describing how digital advancement had led to an increase in loneliness.
- Harris had stated that social pain is now equivalent to physical pain.
- Harries stated that recent studies indicate that loneliness increased morality by 26%.
- Between 20-80% of adolescences are lonely compared to 40-50% of elderly individuals who are lonely.
PARAGRAPH 1: AGAINST
Evaluation
WEAKNESS:
- many relationships online have actually created a stronger and much secure bond; than face-to-face. This is because digital forms of communication allows individuals to vocalise their opinions and freely express their identity; allowing them to create a virtual community with those who share the same views or similar identity.
Paragraph 2: FOR
Point
Shaw and Gant (2002) had challenged the hypothesis that internet use is positively correlated with depression, loneliness and stress. Shaw and Gant had found that the increase in internet use had resulted in a significant decrease in loneliness and depression, while perceived social support and self-esteem increased significantly.
Paragraph 2: FOR
Evidence
American study by Sheila Cotton at the university of Alabama surveyed 8,000 individuals over the age of 50 on the extent of their social-networking use. The results showed that individuals who used the internet most, were 1/3 less likely to be depressed.
CONCLUSION: Digital communications allows the older generation to maintain a consistent engagement with their family and friends.
Paragraph 2: FOR
Evaluation
STRENGTH:
- Discusses ways in which the digital forms of communication can have a positive impact on the relationships maintained by he older generation through digital forms of communication and how it has participated in part of the cure for their loneliness.
Paragraph 3: AGAINST
Point
Kraut et al (2002) argued that online social ties are weaker than relationships formed and maintained offline.
Paragraph 3: AGAINST
Evidence
Russel Clayton, a student at the university of Missouri, had held a research where he claimed that these negative relationships developed online has lead to emotional and physical cheating, breakup and divorce. In Clayton’s research he found that the more active an individual was on Twitter, the more likely their to report Twitter related conflicts with partners. This concluded to individuals feeling frustrated by the time consumption that their partners spend online, or conflict resulting from what was being said online. Resulting into negative effects on people’s relationship, including infidelity or even divorce.

WEAKNESSES
- social media is just another reason for couples to get annoyed with one another. Social media cannot be entirely at fault for the negative interconnection between a couple. If social media is to be blamed for the negative bond within relationships, then surely the work place should be viewed as a negative thing that creates conflict between a couple, after all most affairs happen in the workplace.
