Section A - Materials and their working properties - paper and boards Flashcards
Common uses
Book covers, greeting cards, packaging, advertising, hot foil stamping and embossing
What is paper and board made from
Paper and board are made from cellulose fibres (wood pulp) found in wood, rags or grasses (which are all renewable materials)
Explain why paper and board is more environmentally friendly than polymer
Paper and board is at least part-recycled, making it amore environmentally friendly material than polymer
Sizes of paper
Paper is measured in sizes from A0 - A6
unit Measurement of paper
Paper is measured in _____
grams per square metre (gsm)
Density/thickness of photocopier paper
Photocopier paper is usually 80 gsm
The thinner the paper the lower the __________
The thinner the paper the lower the grams per square metre (gsm)
What measurement is considered a type of paper
Anything less than 200gsm is considered a type of paper
Types of paper
bleed proof
cartridge paper
grid
layout paper
tracing paper
Properties of bleed proof paper
Smooth paper, often used with water and spirit based markers
Prevents marker bleed (when ink runs and seeps through the paper)
(This paper is slightly textured with a white coating, thin)
Coated to stop colour seeping
Common uses of bleed proof paper
Used for presentation drawings
Properties of cartridge paper
Good quality white paper often with a slight texture
Available in different weights
The paper is completely opaque
more expensive than other papers.
Common uses of cartridge paper
Due to the good-quality surface, it can be used for paints and markers as well as drawing
Properties of grid paper
Paper printed with different grids as guidelines (these can be isometric or differently sized grids)
Lines are usually blue but can be darker to trace through
Common uses of grid paper
Quick model-making and working drawings
Commonly used for mathematics, graphs, diagrams and layout drawings.
Properties of layout paper
Thin translucent lightweight paper
Can be drawn on with markers and takes colours well
Common uses of Layout paper
Initial quick sketching and tracing
Properties of tracing paper
Thin, transparent paper
This paper takes most drawing medium very well.
