Paper and board are made from cellulose fibres (wood pulp) found in wood, rags or grasses (which are all renewable materials)

Properties of bleed proof paper
Smooth paper, often used with water and spirit based markers
Prevents marker bleed (when ink runs and seeps through the paper)
(This paper is slightly textured with a white coating, thin)

Common uses of bleed proof paper
Used for presentation drawings
Properties of cartridge paper
Good quality white paper often with a slight texture
Available in different weights
The paper is completely opaque
more expensive than other papers.
Common uses of cartridge paper
Due to the good-quality surface, it can be used for paints and markers as well as drawing
Properties of grid paper
Paper printed with different grids as guidelines (these can be isometric or differently sized grids)
Lines are usually blue but can be darker to trace through
Common uses of grid paper
Quick model-making and working drawings
Commonly used for mathematics, graphs, diagrams and layout drawings.

Thin translucent lightweight paper
Can be drawn on with markers and takes colours well

Initial quick sketching and tracing
Properties of tracing paper
Thin, transparent paper
This paper takes most drawing medium very well.

Describe the use of isometric grid paper
Isometric grid paper makes drawing in 3D easier by providing grid lines at 30 degree angles (as triangles). This allows us to accurately create isometric drawings

Board (card or cardboard) are always greater than 200 gsm

Properties of corrugated card
Strong, lightweight material
(corrugations make it strong)
Made up of two or more layers of card and a fluted middle section leading to good insulating properties
Easy to print on

Common uses of corrugated card
Packaging such as pizza boxes, and large boxes used for heavy items that need protecting
Properties of duplex board
Thin board which often has one side that is suitable for printing
This board has two layers glued together often with a white external layer.
Stiff, lightweight
Common uses of duplex board
Food packaging
Properties of foil lined board
Board covered on one side with aluminium foil, making it a good insulator of heat
This board has a white card outer and laminated to an aluminium foil inner.
This board is strong
It is water and oil resistant

Takeaway (to retain heat for longer periods) or ready-meal packaging
Properties of foam core board
Two pieces of board with a core of foam to increase the thickness
Thick board that is very lightweight and strong , rigid
Prone to creasing and cracking

Model making, such as architect models
Mounting posters/photographs
Properties of inkjet card
Treated so it can be used in all printers
Designed so that the ink doesn’t bleed - this allows the printed image to be sharply defined and of a high quality
