Section A:key Terms Flashcards
Adaptation
Actions taken to adjust to natural hazard events, such as climate change, to reduce damage, limit the impacts, take advantage of opportunities are cope with the consequences
Axial tilt
The change between the planets rotational axis and its orbital axis
Carbon dioxide
Occurs naturally in earths atmosphere
Climate change
A long time change in the earths climate, change due to the increase in the average atmospheric temperature
Eccentricity
Shape of the earths orbit, as a measure of the degree to which it departs from its circular shape
*degree
Enhanced Greenhouse effect
A process where the earths surface is heated by the greenhouse effect at a higher rate due to increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities
Fossil fuel
Is a natural fuels, such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms
Greenhouse affect
A natural process where greenhouse gases trap the energy from the Sun inside the earths atmosphere, warming the Earth surface
Greenhouse gases
Gases in the atmosphere that raise the surface temperature because they trap heat which causes the greenhouse effect
Ice core
Cylinders of ice drilled out of an ice sheet a glacier
Milankovitch cycles
The angle of tilt on earths axis changes over 41,000 years
Mitigation
The action of reducing the severity of an event
Orbital changes
The Earth has a natural warming and cooling period is caused by Milan Cavitch cycle
Precession
As Earth rotate, it wobbles slightly upon its rotation axis
Quaternary period
The third and last of the three periods of the cenozoic era
Atmospheric circulation
General movement of air around the Earth, due to pressure and temperature
Atmospheric hazard
Hazard caused by the weather and processes in the atmosphere
Carbon capture and storage
The process of capturing carbon dioxide that would normally be admitted into the atmosphere, installing it underground in reservoirs
Climate change
Change in global original patterns of climate, such as changes in temperature and precipitation patterns
Convection current
The movementof a fluid caused by difference in temperature of density
The Coriolis effect
The effect of the earths rotation on wind movement
Eye
An area of a tropical storm with extremely low pressure and calm conditions
Eyewall
An area of a tropical storm with the most intense, powerful winds, and torrential rain
Ferrel cell
Around 60° either side of the equator, moist air rises in travels to lower latitudes are around 30°, where it sinks along with air, travelling from the equator
Hadley cell
At the equator hot, moist air rises, moves to higher latitudes, 30° and sinks
Magma
Molten rock from beneath the earths surface
Mantle
Area underneath the crust which contains magma
Marine sediment core
A cylinder of ocean sediment removed from the ocean floor, which is used to analyse past environmental conditions
Polar cell
60° north or south of the equator, moist air rises, and travels to the polls, 90°, where it syncs
Subduction
Process that occurs at a destructive plate margin, when I play is posh, blow another plate, forcing it to sink into the mantle
