Section 7: Adverse Weather Operation Flashcards
What should be done when water condensation is on canopy?
Select DEFOG MAX as early as possible after engine start
When flying in heavy precipitation, what should be done?
- Select INTAKE to OPEN
- Ignition to IGN
What occurs to landing distances and drift when landing on wet runways?
Landing distances will increase and drift will be greater with crosswind.
What is the technique to fly through thunderstorms?
Attempt to maintain attitude - be prepared for sudden changes in altitude and airspeed.
What are the threats associated with flying through thunderstorms?
1) Severe turbulence that can exceed A/C climb performance
2) Lightning strikes that can cause damage
3) Severe icing
4) Hail can cause severe damage to surfaces
5) Very heavy rain causes reduced visibility
6) Severe wind squalls and windshear that can make TO + Landing hazardous.
What should be done to fly through thunderstorm, if it can’t be avoided?
1) Reduce speed to 200 KIAS
2) Operate inertial separator switch INTAKE
3) Select engine ignition to IGN
4) Maintain aircraft attitude
If OAT is < 0 C:
- Make sure INTAKE, PROP, PROBES are on
- Select ECS regulation to DEFOG MAX
Is flight into known icing conditions prohibited?
Yes
How should ice and accumulated snow be removed? Why can’t it be scrapped off?
- Using de-ice fluid or heater NOT scraping it off
- Scraping it off could cause damage to A/C surfaces.
Below what oil temperature should the engine not be started?
-40 deg
What can be used to raise oil temperature?
Heater
Below what temperature (depending on BATT 1 voltage), what is it recommended to use?
An external power unit.
Below what oil temp should engine be left at idle?
0 C
How should A/C be taxied on ice and snow?
. Slowly with great care, steering just with NWS avoid differential braking.
- Increase separation between A/C
What should be done when in flight icing conditions are encountered?
1) INTAKE, PROP, PROBES = all on
2) DEFOG to Max
Above what crosswind component must the canopy not be opened on the ground?
35 knots
What is the correct technique for a crosswind TO?
- Hold elevator in neutral position to allow NWS to keep a straight track
- Apply aileron into wind and opposite rudder to prevent adverse yaw.
- At rotation, rotate positively and allow A/C to yaw into wind
- Rudder may be required to keep a straight track at low airspeeds on lift off
What is the maximum demonstrated crosswind component for landing?
24 knots
What is the recommended turbulence penetration speed?
160 to 200 KIAS
How many miles should be kept from heavy aircraft when taking off and landing?
Several miles due wake turbulence.
Should you avoid pulling high g in close proximity to another A/C?
Yes due to vortex separation.
What do hot temperatures do to engine acceleration times?
- Increase engine acceleration times.
- Allowance must be made for this, especially on final approach.
Below what ITT should the PCL be put to IDLE on engine start?
180 C to prevent excessive high engine temperatures.
While static on the ground in hot conditions, should the A/C be pointed into the wind?
Yes as much as practicable to reduce oil and engine temperatures.
What can be done on the ground to reduce engine and oil temperatures?
- Increase NG.
- Limit is 860 at NG 63%
When flying on hot days, what altitude should A/C should try and be operated at? Why is this?
> 10 000 ft
To reduce oil temperatures.
What does high OAT do to TO and landing distances?
Increases them
