What does bylaw 12, standards of professional practice, say about independence?
That wherever and however they practice, all members are bound by standards of independence and holding paramount public interest and professional principles.
What objective of the association as per the foresters act mentions independence?
Associate will uphold public interest by ensuring competence, independence, professional conduct, and integrity of its members holding them accountable
Why is independence part of the forestry profession?
It comes from the right and title to practice and the privilige to self regulate, the public gauges a profession by its independence.
How is independence demonstrated?
By objective application of profesional judgement, even when taking positions as long as they are objective, honest and all aspects are recognized.
Why have a self regulated field?
Government understanding some fields are extremely complex, and important enough economically, socially and environmentally that only certain individual may practice and they are the best experts for regulating the field.

Public interest

Legislative foundation, competence, integrity, accountability, forest stewardship, external environment, internal environment
What five things must a member be independent from in their decisions?
Special interest groups, majority groups (maintstream thinking), self interest, employers/clients
What does giving independent consideration mean?
Initially considering all opinions, advice, info to be valid. Then testing validity to see if they satisfy publicly established resource objectives.
What should a member do if they believe a standard, directive, legislation, policy is detrimental to good stewardship?
If detrimental, possibly withdraw from services. But that is extreme, most likely they would advocate for change.
What can independence NOT be used to do?
Unfairly criticize, oppose or refuse a mgmt objective, legislation, policy or standard from client or employer based on personal disagreement.
What is the range of action to take in a case of conflict of professional opinion?
Propose feasable solutions
Advocate for change

Summarize what to do in the case of a deeply rooted difference in belief between two opposing parties.
Avoid debate and arguement which can increase antagonism, but instead try to understand the other parties position and try to find a mutally agreeable independent source of information.
What is involved in amicable dialogue aimed at resolving differences of opinion?
While recognizing that this is a learning experience, try to see difference may just be over methodology (not results) and try to use independent party to facilitate resolution.
What steps must one take when epressing professional opinion in order to maintain independence?
State who youre representing, pro/con facts for both sides, professional recommendations based on sound scientific facts and upholding professional principles
What is independence?
Group of characteristics coming from actions resulting from duty of care to the public. It is based on trust and confidence in impartiality and intellectual honesty.
