Andon
Is a lean production method that uses visual control systems to indicate the status of an aspect of the production process e.g. machinery, production line or working process
Benchmarking
Is the process of identifying the best practice in an industry, in relation to products, processes and operations. It sets the standard for another firm to emulate
Cradle to cradle (C2C)
Is a sustainable model of production based on natural processes. The underlying principle of C2C is there is no waist in nature, making production sustainable for future generations
ISO 9000
Is the worlds most widely recognized standard for quality management. It is endorsed by the ISO to firms that use quality management systems to meet the needs of customers
Just in time (JIT)
Is an inventory management system based on stocks being delivered as in when they are needed in the production process. As stocks are delivered just before they are used, there is no need to have buffer stocks
Kaizen
Is the Japanese term for ‘continuous improvement’ a lean production philosophy will work as a man just continually try to find ways to improve what processes and efficiency
Kanban
Is a method of reproduction used to ensure that inventory is based on actual customer orders using a card system with an inventory number attached to each component in the production process
Lean production
Refers to the approach used to eliminate waste in an organization. As a result, lean organizations benefit from higher productivity and lower costs
Quality
Means that a good or service must be fit for its purpose by meeting or exceeding the expectations of customers
Quality assurance
Refers to the methods used by a business to reassure customers that is products meet certain quality standards, such as the ISO 9000
Quality circles
Are groups of workers that meat on a regular basis to identify problems related to quality assurance, to consider alternate solutions to the identified problems, and to make feasible recommendations for improvement
Quality control
Is the traditional way of quality management involves checking and reviewing what processes. This is usually carried out by Quality Controllers and inspectors
Quality management
Is the function concerned with controlling business activities to ensure that products are fit for that purpose. the quality of a production is seen as an overall package, from the production and the purchase of the product to its use and beyond (after sales care)
Total quality management (TQM)
Is the process that attempts to encourage all employees to make quality assurance Paramount’s in the various functions (production, finance, marketing and HRM) of an organization
Zero defects
Is the goal of producing each and every product without any mistakes or imperfection dead by eliminating waste and reworking time (the time taken to correct faults)
