What is crime?
An act against the law
What is judgement?
The act of judging people and their actions
What is justice?
The maintenance of what is right
What is the law?
Rules made by Parliament and enforceable by the courts
Why do we need laws?
To keep peace and organisation
Protect weak from strong
Businessmen get their rightful rewards
Why does there need to be a connection between law and justice?
If a law is unjust, it will be broken,the other laws will be questioned, it will not be obeyed -> Civil war
What are the main theories of punishment?
Retribution, Protection, Reform, Deterrence
Describe the punishment theory of Retribution
Punishments should make criminals pay for what they have done wrong
Describe the punishment theory of Deterrence
Puts people off committing the crime
Describe the punishment theory of Reform
Punishments should try to change criminals so they don’t commit the crime
Describe the punishment theory of Protection
Punishment should protect society from criminals e.g Capital Punishment, Long prison sentences, Community service
What is the Capital Punishment?
The death penalty for a crime/ offence
Why is justice important for Christians?
God is just
Jesus said rich should share with the poor
Christian Churches - need for Chs to work for justice
New Testament - Chs should treat everyone equally
Why is justice important for Hindus
Hindus must perform dharma and treat everyone as equals
Ahimsa encourages justice and equality
Gandhi -> Sarvodaya (Hindu concept of justice)
Gurus + Swamis teach to treat others justly
What are the non religious arguments in favour of the capital punishment?
It acts as a deterrent
Best way to protect society from murderers and terrorists is to kill them so they can’t reoffend
Value of human life is equal -> one person takes one should get theirs taken
Only retribution for murder is the capital punishment
