Q

What is the evidence for design?

A

DNA - Blueprint for all living life.
Evolution - Shows how complex everything is
Laws of science - the universe works according to laws such as gravity and electricity. Complex things are working together.

Q

Why may design lead to belief in God?

9
Q

Why may design not lead to belief in God?

A

All evidence for God is explained by science with little mention of God.
It doesn’t mention dinosaurs or extinction which could be a lack of design.
Why does the designer have to be God? And if he is, is he good or bad?

Q

What is causation?

A

The belief that one thing causes another and everything has a cause. But infinite regress means that there must be an uncaused cause which is God.

11
Q

Explain the cosmological argument

A

That any effect has a cause as nothing can cause itself to exist. Any effect has a cause so the universe and people need a cause and there must be an uncaused cause.

Q

Why may people disagree with the cosmological argument?

A

Why does the cause process have to stop at God?
Could it be a different creator which isn’t God?
The argument contradicts itself.

Q

What are the scientific explanations which could lead to agnostic/atheism?

A

State theory - the world came to being this way
Matter is eternal and it can’t be created or destroyed.
Big Bang - matter flew away and formed stars and eventually our solar system.
Gases on earth lead to primitive life and with mutations and natural selection led evolution.
Red shift effect shows universe is expanding

Q

Why may scientific explanations lead to agnostic/atheism

A

Science explains how the world was formed with no mention of God. If God created the world, surely he would be the only expansion. Some people only want one explanation. Science or God?

17
Q

How may a Christian upbringing support or lead to belief in God?

A

Children see respected people praying and wouldn’t think they’re praying to nothing
Taught God exists at church and schools
Would have thanked God for blessings

18
Q

How do Christians respond to unanswered prayers?

A

Some prayers could be inappropriate
Could be answered but in the way they expected and the outcome may not always be good
Motivation for them to do something to relieve evil or to get rid of suffering

19
Q

How may evil and suffering lead to atheism/agnosticism?

A

If God is omnipotent, omni-benevolent or omniscient, surely he would want to remove evil, be able to remove evil or know it would e in the world. Evil and suffering exists so either God doesn’t exist or isn’t all good or powerful

20
Q

How do Christians respond to evil and suffering?

A

God may have a reason that humans can’t understand but we should try to relieve it - many Christians become doctors to help ppl
Much evil is a result of misuse of free will - humans abusing their freedom to make selfish choices
Life is a test - need to deal with challenges and become more loving caring good and kind people

21
Q

How do Christians respond to the Big Bang?

A

Creationism
The points in the bible fit the Big Bang e.g let there be light
God chose when to trigger the Big Bang as it needed to happen at a very precise moment.

21
Q

What is creationism?

A

To reject science completely as you interpret the bible literally and to solely believe in genesis

21
Q

What do the Christians (who think the bible points fit the Big Bang) think about the creation of the world.

A

Points such as “let there be light” fit the explosion and one of gods days could be billions of years

21
Q

What do the Christians who think that God triggered the bing bang think about the creation of the world?

A

Bing bang had to happen at a very precise moment and God knew when to trigger it. God designed the complex laws of science and gases formed primitive life.

22
Q

What is agnosticism?

A

Not being sure whether God exists

23
Q

What is atheism?

A

Believing that God does not exist.

24
