What are weapons of mass destruction?
Weapons that can devastate large areas and kill large numbers of people
What is pacifism?
A belief that all disputes should be settles by peaceful means
What is just war?
A war that is fought in the right way for the right reasons
What is conflict resolution?
Bringing a fight or a struggle to a peaceful conclusion
What is the UN?
An international body set up to promote world peace and cooperation
What is aggression?
Attacking without being provoked
What is exploitation?
Taking advantage of a weaker group
What is respect?
Treating someone or their feelings with consideration
What is world peace?
The ending of war through out the world. Basic aim of UN
What is bullying?
Intimidating or frightening people who are weaker than yourself
What is forgiveness?
Stopping blaming someone and/or pardoning a person for what they have done wrong
What a reconciliation
Bringing people back together to a point of harmony after a dispute
What are some methods which the UN can impose peace by?
- Imposing sanctions e.g banning trade
- Authorising use of force by member states
- Sending a UN peacekeeping force
How do religious organisations work for world peace?
- Going to war zones and supporting efforts to stop the war
- Organising demonstrations against wars
- Educating people about the need for world peace
What are the 4 main reasons why wars occur?
Religion
Nationalism and ethnicity
Economics
Ideological and political differences
Why can wars occur in terms of religion?
- One country may feel followers of another country are being mistreated
- Majority of one area is one religion, majority of country is another
- Differences within religion
Why may wars occur in terms of nationalism and ethnicity?
- One belief is each separate ethnic group should have its own country -> Civil wars
- Any minority religion should be removed from sed country
- Tensions between groups arise as a result of colonialism
Why may wars occur in terms of economics?
- One country may invade another if that country is rich in natural resources
- Economic problems may lead to crisis in another country e.g one goes bust -> lots of refugees arriving in another country
Why may wars occur in terms of ideological and political differences?
- 2 different political groups are fighting for power
- One political idea e.g Fascism wants to spread e.g Hitler, WW2
What are the main attitudes among all religions about war?
Pacifism, Fight in just wars
What are some reasons why christians are being pacifists?
- Sermon on the Mount -> shouldn’t resist evil
- Jesus taught to love thy enemy -> can’t love who you’re killing
- 5th commandment -> Thou shall not kill
- Christians were pacifists for first 300 years of Christianity
- Weapons of Mass Destruction -> killing civvies
What are some reasons why Christians fight in a Just War?
- Teaching of all main Churches -> Christians have right to fight
- St Paul in Romans 13 and Titus 3 -> Obey orders of Gov
- Jesus never condemned soldiers
- Everyone agrees that a police/army is needed to protect innocents
What are some reasons why Hindus are pacifists?
- Ahimsa -> core and moral teaching of Hinduism
- Fighting war darkens your soul and puts it further away from moksha
- Gandhi’s Satyagraha -> truth force -> can remove injustice pacifily
- Modern weapons cause so much suffering it is against Hinduism teachings
What are some reasons why Hindus fight in just wars?
- Warrior caste -> defend society by war if necessary
- Bhagavad Gita -> warriors must fight in wars -> don’t fear dying cos if you die, you will be reincarnated
- LoM -> civs must not be hurt, any surrenders must be disarmed
- Stories of battles in Hindu scriptures
Why are christians against bullying?
- Violence without a just cause is sinful
- Bullying is mistreating gods creation
- Duty to protect the weak e.g Parable of GS
- Para of Sheep+Goats -> should treat anyone in trouble as Jesus. no Ch would bully Jesus
Why are Hindus against bullying?

- Every person has a soul which is part of the divine. mistreating brings bad karma
- Duty to protect weak and inno -> bring good karma
- Human right - life free from fear -> Hindus protect these rights
What are some reasons why Christians believe in forgiveness and reconciliation?
- Jesus -> if you don’t forgive sinners, god won’t forgive you for your skins
- St Paul ->Ch should live in peace with everyone -> need reconciliation
- Ch based on forgiveness and reconciliation. Ch should be committed to forgiveness
- Jesus allowed reconciliation between god and human. Died on cross
Why do most Hindus believe in reconciliation and forgiveness?
- Gunas -> forgiv+recon are a quality of light (sattva)
- Upanishads -> danger to ones soul if he doesn’t forgive
- Swamis taught forgive and to bring recon -> part of moksha
- Refusing recon+forgiv means soul is bitter and twisted -> prevent moksha
