Was there any change to liturgy in England after the break with Rome?
No - The services were still using the existing Catholic Missal.
What happened to John Lambert?
He was executed for heresy on November 22, 1538, at Smithfield, London.
Why was John Lambert executed?
He was condemned for rejecting the doctrine of transubstantiation.
Who was involved in the trial of John Lambert?
Henry VIII, along with prominent figures like Thomas Cromwell and Thomas Cranmer, debated theological issues with Lambert.
What were the Ten Articles?
The first attempt to provide the nascent Church in England with an identifiable set of beliefs.

Henry was very disapproving of the book. Although he authorised its use he revoked it three years later.
What was the name of the English Bible that was to be followed in parishes?
Mathew Bible / The Great Bible.
When was the Great Bible published?
August 1537.
How supportive was Henry of the Great Bible?
In the 1530s Henry was pleased with the Bible but in the 1540s he was more cautious about it as the Bible had come from translations made by Tyndale and Luther meaning the focus of the Bible could be contested.
When was Henry excommunicated?
17th December 1538 Henry VIII was excommunicated.
When was the Act of the Six Articles passed?
June 1539.
What did the Six Articles originate from?
A discussion held in the House of Commons about the religious position of England (after Henry was excommunicated).
What were the six terms of the Six Articles?
○ To uphold the practice of transubstantiation.
○ That communion in both kinds is not necessary.
○ That priest may not marry by the law of God.
○ The vows of chastity were binding under divine law.
○ Private masses can be held.
○ That auricular confession is necessary.
What was commissioned by Parliament in 1540?
Bishops and theologians were commissioned to produce a replacement for the Bishops’ Book.

The King’s Book.
When was the King’s Book published?
5th of May 1543.
What did the King’s Book highlight the importance of?
