What were the years in which the Reformation Parliament was operating?
1529-1536
What were the years of drift and when did they occur?
Change between Wolsey and Cromwell coming to power.
1530-1531.
What were the main concerns of the MPs during the Reformation Parliament?
- Grievances with Wolsey.
- Excess fines for probate.
- Mortuary fees.
- Church involved in trade.
- Pluralism.
What were the ways in which Henry considered putting pressure on the Pope to annul his marriage?
- Weakening the will of the Church to resist what Henry wanted - using praemunire.
- Taking legal control of the Church and depriving the Pope of authority.
What was the Submission of the Clergy?
- Henry charged 15 clergymen with praemunire.
- Henry said he would drop the charges if the Church provided £100,000 and agreed to changing Henry’s title to Supreme Head.
What was the Act for the Submission of the Clergy?
- Signed by the clergy acknowledging Henry at the head of the Church.
- Canon laws to be overseen by 32 people all appointed by Henry - all laws must be given royal assent.
What was the Supplication of the Ordinaries (1532)?
A petition passed by the Commons against the ways in which the church gained money. It uncovered things such as mortuary fees and the number of holy days.
What was the Act to Remove the Annates (1532)?
- Removed the payment of annates to the Pope.
- Henry was present to ensure that the vote passed.
What was the Act for the Restraint of Appeals (1533)?
- This prevented anyone appealing to the Pope on legal and church matters.
- The marriage of Henry and Catherine couldn’t be nullified by the Pope.
What was the act passed in 1534?
The Act forbidding Papal dispensation and payment of Peter’s Pence:
- Prevented the annul tax to Rome.
- It put all ecclesiastical powers in the hands of the King.
What was the First Act of Succession (1534)?
Made the marriage with Catherine invalid and declared Mary to be illegitimate - it made it treasonable offense to deny the succession.
What was the Act of Supremacy?
- Allowed Henry to collect the Fruits and tenths-a-tax which had previously gone to Rome: made it a treasonable offence to call the monarch a heretic.
- Henry added the claim of Supreme Head to his title.
What key events in Henry’s personal life occurred during the Reformation Parliament?
- Henry and Anne were secretly married ( Jan. 1533).
- Cranmer declares Henry and Catherine’s marriage null and void (May 1533).
