Section 1.2 Flashcards
Describe ad hoc networking
When devices are connected directly to one another by either using wifi, bluetooth or NFC
What are the three different types of wireless topologies?
Infrastructure, ad hoc networking, and mesh
What network device is an example of an infrastructure topology?
An access point
What type of wireless topologies are IOT devices likely to use?
Star (Infrastructure) and Mesh
What are three types of Personal Area Network?
Bluetooth, IR (Infrared) and NFC
What are some examples of IR devices?
Remote controls, motion detectors, thermometer guns, and night vision cameras
What are the main differences between NAS and SAN?
Network Attached Storage is like a shared folder for easy file access. It’s good for storing unchanging files.
Storage Area Network is like a highway for data, and great for big companies with higher demands. It’s good for frequently changing and updating files.
What does MPLS stand for and how does it work?
Multiprotocol Label Switching.
It speeds up and prioritizes network traffic by using labels instead of entire packet headers. It also works with various data formats like IP, Ethernet, and Frame Relay.
What is mGRE?
Multipoint Generic Router Encapsulation
Why is mGRE (Multipoint Generic Routing Encapsulation) used?
It’s scalable, flexible, and dynamic. Tunnels can be created as needed from site to site.
What are smartjacks?
It’s basically an advanced demarcation point that is used by the service provider to remotely monitor, diagnose, and troubleshoot network issues.
What does NFV stand for?
Network Function Virtualization
What’s the purpose of NFV (Network Function Virtualization)?
To replace physical network devices with virtual versions.
What is used to deploy and manage virtual machines?
The hypervisor
What is a virtual switch called and what can it do?
vSwitch
It has the same functionalities of a physical switch
What’s a vNIC?
Virtual Network Interface Card
How does a virtual machine connect to a network?
using a vNIC
What are the pros and cons of satellite networking?
Great for remote locations and speeds of up to 50Mbps down/3Mbps up.
Disadvantage is high latency (up to 250ms up and down), expensive, and requires line of sight, so bad weather can negatively affect connectivity.
What determines your network speed with DSL, and what is the max speed?
Your distance from the central office (CO). Max speed is around 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up.
What is the maximum distance a DSL connection can reach?
10,000 feet
What type of line does DSL use?
Telephone line
What is the range of bandwidth for Cable?
50 to 1000Mbps
How is Metro-E different from the internet?
It’s a dedicated and private Metro Area Network that’s often used by businesses for higher speed and reliability.
How is Metro-optical different from Metro-ethernet?
Metro-optical focuses on the physical infrastructure of optical fiber. Metro-ethernet uses the infrastructure of Metro-optical for ethernet-based services.
