what is an ordered government?
local government offices (sheriff, coroner, and justice of the peace) that the colonists copied from Great Britain
what is a limited government?
The concept that the government should NOT be all powerful. each and every person has an alienable rights or basic freedoms that cannot be taken away. this concept began with the Magna Carta document.
what is a representative government?
A government by, of, and for the people. the people should be served and they must have a voice in what the government can and cannot do.
what was the first colony to be established, and what settlement did it grow from?
Virginia and it grew from the settlement of Jamestown.
What was the last colony to be formed and what settlement did it grow from?
Georgia and it grew from a port settlement at Savannah.
what colony was first settled by people in search of greater personal and religious freedom?
Massachusetts
what were royal colonies?
they were subject to the direct control of the king. The king hand-picked the governor, who often ruled harshly. any laws passed in a royal colony had to be approved by the governor and the king. This system is most responsible for angering the colonists.
what were three colonies who were royal colonies?
Virginia, Georgia, and Massachusetts.
what were proprietary colonies?
The king made a grant of land to a proprietor, Who appointed the governor. The proprietor was basically a landlord who stood between the king and the colony.
What were the three proprietary colonies?
Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
what were the charter colonies?
they were largely self governing. Power over colonial affairs was held by the colonists. The governor was elected each year by free men, and laws were not subject to the governor or the kings approval.
what were the only two charter colonies?
Connecticut and Rhode Island.
