SECONDARY Flashcards
1
Q
(Scar)
- what is it?
- Most scars are what?
A
- an area of fibrous tissue that has replaced severe damage to the dermis or subcutaneous tissue
- alopecic, atrophic, and depigmented
(proliferative scars do occur and in dark skinned dogs can be alopecic and hyperpigmented)
2
Q
(Erosion)
- what is it?
- generally results from what?
A
- a shallow break in the continuity of the epidermis that does not penetrate the basal cell layer and consequently heals without scarring
- from epidermal diseases and self inflicted trauma
3
Q
(Ulcer)
- what is it?
- What is required for an ulcer?
- what commonly forms after an ulcer heals?
A
- a deeper break in the continuity (relative to erosion) with the exposure of the underlying dermis
- a deep pathologic process
- a scar
4
Q
(Excoriation)
- what is it?
- recognized by what?
- diffs?
A
- erosions or ulcers caused by scratching, biting, rubbing
They are self-inflcted and associated with secondary bacterial infection
- linear pattern
- self-trauma from pruritis
5
Q
(Epidermal Collarette)
- what is it?
- often indicates what?
A
- superficial lesion arranged as a circular rim of loose keratin
- superficial staphylococcal infection
6
Q
(Lichenification)
- what is it?
- often result of what?
- color?
- indicates what?
A
- thickened, hardened skin with exaggerated superficial skin markings (elephant hide)
- friction
- may be normal, erythmatous, often hyperpigmented
- chronic inflammation
7
Q
(Draining Sinus Tracts)
- what is it?
- may result from what?
- diff?
A
- ulcerated tracts in the skin usually originating in the deep dermis or subcutaneous fat.
- osteomyelitis (bone marrow infection)
- deep pyoderma (furunculosis = rupture of hair follicle)
subcutaneous or deep mycotic infections
8
Q
(Hyperkeratosis)
- what is it?
A
- increase in the thickness of the stratum corneum (horny layer)
9
Q
(Fissure)
- what is it?
- can be caused by what?
- They occur when?
- occur more often where?
A
- a linear cleavage into the epidermis, extending sometimes into the dermis
- disease process or injury
- when the skin is thick and inelastic and then subject to sudden swelling from inflammation or trauma
- ear margins, footpads, mucocutaneous junctions of the mouth and anus, and planum nasale
