A
-Vasocongestion caused by intrapelvic pressure

A
-The sacrum and three lower lumbar vertebrae.

A
-Pressure on the rectum

How long should primips be in the second stage?
A
3 hours, consider intervention if birth not imminent after 2

How long should multips be in the second stage?
A
2 hours active, consider intervention if birth no imminent after 1 hour.

How often are VE offered in the active second stage?
A
-Every hour.

What is the assessment of wellbeing in the second stage?
A
- BP hourly
- Temp 4 hourly
- Pulse every 15
- Frequency of uterine contractions every 30 minutes
- Frequency of passing urine
- Hourly VE’
- FH every 5 minutes or after every contraction for 1 minute

What occurs following crowning?
A
- The head extends and the sinciput, face and chin sweeps the perineum.
- Restitution occurs
- Internal rotation of the shoulders and external rotation of the head.
- With the next contraction the shoulders and the body are born.

What occurs following birth?
A
- Skin to skin
- Dry and cover or wrap baby to prevent heat loss put hat on.
- Estimate Apgar scores at 1 minute and 5 minutes.
