What is Entonox?
*50% nitrous oxidem 50% oxygen
What is the mode of action of entonox?
-Thought to be via release of endorphins and serotonin under action of nitrous oxide and inhibiting pain receptors
What is the route of entonox?
-inhaled through mouthpiece or mask (non-return valve).
What is the effect of entonox?
-In 20-30 seconds, maximum effect in 2-3 minutes rapidly metabolised and eliminated by the lungs. There are no adverse effects for a women and baby.
What are the three opioids used to manage pain in labour?
-Diamorphine, Pethidine and remifentanil
What is the mode of action of opioids?
-Act on opioid receptors in the brain
What is the route of opioids?
- Diamorphine and pethidine are IM injections
- Remifentanil is via a PCA IV drip.
