What is one of the biggest challenges China faces as it gets richer?
The pollution levels.

The smoke factories send lots of toxic fumes in the air.
Why is the air in China difficult to breathe in?
It can be fatal - people can get lung diseases and cancers, therefore limiting what people can do.
What are then the steep costs that come with economic success?
Polluted air, water and food. Once London was also associated with thick smog.
Give an example to show just how dirty the air in China is.
The air is so dirty there are layers of soot on buildings, clothes, cars and peoples’ skin.
What do people think China should do as a result of the pollution?
China may need to do more action to combat pollution and safeguard people’s health.
What is China’s primary energy source?
China’s economy is extremely energy intensive and relies on fossil fuels - for example China relies on coal to feed its coal fired power-plants (more than 2,300 of them) so much that they imported more coal than any other country in history last year.
Why are the Chinese government seeking alternative energy sources?
They are trying to use more clean and renewable energy as the pollution from fossil fuels has risen to hazardous levels. They are also trying to promote energy saving and environmental protection.
What did China’s Vice Minister of Land announce?
In January 2014, China’s Vice Minister of Land announced that approximately 8 million acres of land is too polluted to crow crops - that is equivalent to an area just under 1/2 of Scotland.
What is mostly responsible for Beijing’s notorious haze?
The coal burning and industrial pollution in Beijing is responsible for 69% of the city’s notorious haze.
What are two positive aspects of the One Child Policy?
People have managed to lift themselves out of poverty as there are less mouths to feed, and also the population has been set back for a while. There would be a much larger population by now if they had not introduced it.
