What is it?
Eczema of areas rich in sebaceous glands
What causes it? (2)
Overgrowth of Pityrosporum Ovale (a type of yeast) plus an overly strong immune response to the organism
Signs and Symptoms in Adults (3)
Affects body areas rich in sebaceous glands e.g nose, eyebrows, eyes and scalp, inflammation, scaling
Signs and Symptoms in Neonates (3)
Presents as thick yellow crusts on the scalp (cradle cap), widespread erythematous rash on the trunk and nappy, pruritis
Is it common?
Yes, it affects 1-3% of the adult population
What is the treatment? (4)
Mild topical steroid e.g 1% Hydrocortisone, Anti-fungal e.g Miconazole, emollients and soap substitutes
Complications
It is usually a lot more severe in the elderly and can lead to erythroderma
