Allergic Contact Dermatitis Flashcards
What is it?
Eczema caused by direct irritation or allergic reaction
What type of allergic reaction is involved?
Type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction
What causes it?
Repeated exposure to an allergen but only in those who are susceptible to develop an allergic response
What sort of thing causes it? (5)
Nickel, chromate, latex, perfume, plants
What is irritant dermatitis?
Can occur in anyone when the skin has been irritated due to repeated exposure to irritants such as bleach, soaps, detergents etc
When should you have a suspicion that this is the cause?
If eczema is in an unusual area or if there is no personal/family history of atopic disease
Is it common?
Yes it occurs in up to 4% of the population
What are the symptoms? (7)
Erythematous, itching, pain, dryness, scaling, usually in an unusual position/shape, on the hands
What is the treatment? (6)
Avoidance of allergen/irritant, emollient use, soap substitutes, mild topical steroid for flare up, protective clothing, occupation change
