What is it?
A
Eczema in elderly people

What causes it?(3)
A
Exact cause is unknown but thought to be caused by the repeated use of soaps with the loss of stratum corneum lipids resulting in dryness, or a presentation of hypothyroidism, or commencement of diuretics

Who does it affect?
A
Generally the elderly, especially in winter

Where does it occur?
A
Predominantly on the lower legs and backs of the hands

Signs and Symptoms (4)
A
Dry plate-like cracking of the skin, erythematous, itching, scalyness

What is the treatment? (4)
A
avoidance of soaps, regular emollient use, bath oils, mild topical steroid e.g 1% hydrocortisone
