What is it?
Abnormalities of blood vessels in the face producing a red rash
What causes it? (5)
the exact cause is unknown, but the damage is thought to be linked to sun damage, microscopic mite reaction, h.pylori in the digestive tract, genetics
What are the identified triggers? (8)
Exposure to UV, stress, strenuous exercise, hot/cold weather, hot drinks, alcohol, caffeine, spicy food
*these are all thought to increase levels of skin peptides that induce the immune system resulting in vessel dilation
Signs and Symptoms (7)
Starts with episodes of facial flushing, burning, stinging, permanent redness on cheeks, spots (papules and pustules), visible blood vessels, relapsing nature
What is the treatment? (8)
No cure, avoid triggers, metronidazole cream, ivermectim cream, oral tetracycline, beta blockers, laser treatment, Brimonidine Tartrate can reduce redness
