Flow Path
Glossary
Movement of HEAT AND SMOKE from higher pressure within fire area to all other lower air pressure areas BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE of a fire bldg.
Facts about Flow Paths
- Common for vent opening (windows, doors, ROOF OPENINGS) to act simultaneously as inlet for fresh air AND exhaust vent for products of combustion.
- Bottom = AIR enter; Top = HEAT, SMOKE & FIRE VENT. OUT
- May be several flow paths during a bldg fire
- Every opening in bldg made during fire OP. not only creates a new flow path but also has an impact on existing flow paths.
Heat Release Rate (HRR)
Glossary
Rate at which energy (heat) is released by burning of a fuel AND oxygen mixture
Hydrocarbon based products burn at _____ the rate as ordinary combustibles and generate _____ times the smoke production.
Glossary, pg 2
Twice;
4 - 10
These openings will provide enough air flow that may rapidly expand the fire condition & extension, causing conditions to become untenable in as little as _____ after entry (ventilation) is made into the fire apt.
2.2
1-1/2 minutes
Determining factor as to whether door will remain open or closed while search is being conducted
9.10.1
Whether or not engine co. is ready to advance into the fire area/occupancy.
- Has charged line = door left open; LADDER CO. M chock open door.
- No charged line = door closed after search team enters
