Sea Level Rise Flashcards
What are the two types of sea level rise
Eustatic
Isostatic
What does isostatic mean?
Local change in the height of the land relative to the sea
What does eustatic mean?
World wide change in volume of oceans
What’s the causes of eustatic sea rise
Global warming melts the ice caps which increases sea level, if the water gets hotter then it expands,
What are the causes of eustatic sea fall?
Thermal contraction of water, climate cooling
Causes of isostatic sea level rise
Fall in the level of land due to added weight of glaciers during cooler times
Cause of isostatic sea level fall
Realise of weight of glaciers during warmer times causing the land to rebound relative to the sea
How can tectonics affect sea rise
Large vertical movements of the crust (depression or uplift) can change shape and volume of ocean basins and level of the land. Creation of volcanic islands can displace water increasing sea level
What is the cycle of sea level change
Stage one - global cooling, hydro cycle slows down, now and ice falling, sea level falls(eustatic)
Stage two - compression of land due to the weight of the ice, (isostatic)
Stage 3 - global warming melts the ice causing sea level to rise and creates submergent features (eustatic)
Stage 4 - all/ most ice has melted meaning the land is rebounding (isostatic) causing emergent features to rise
What is the case study for sumbergent islands
Kitribati
Where is Kiribati located?
On the equator east of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean.
What problems are the people of Kiribati facing?
Freshwater contamination, homes being flooded, land loss, forced migration,
What are Dalmatian coasts an example of?
Sumbergent featur
How is a Dalmatian coast formed?
Found when mountains run parallel the coast. Water floods the space behind the mountains either through erosion or because the sea level has risen causing lower land to be flooded/ valley flood. This produces long narrow in lets and they can be found in Croatia.
What is a ria an example of?
A submergent feature
