sea level change isostatic change Flashcards
when does isostatic change occur?
when the land rises or falls relative to sea and is a localised change
local or global (everywhere)?
localised
what is isostatic change often a result of?
isostatic subsidence
what is glacial subsidence?
when glaciers weigh down the land beneath so the land on the other side is raised
what happens when the glacier melts during isostatic subsidence?
isostatic recovery so the land levels out
what else other than isostatic subsidence causes isostatic change?
tectonic activity (earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) as this can also cause land subsidence therefore isostatic sea level change
what is an example of tectonic activity causing land subsidence?
This was seen in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which caused the city of Bandeh Aceh to sink permanently by 0.5m
