what is mass movement?
movement of material down a slope under the influence of gravity
what is soil creep?
slow but continuous mass movement
particles rise and fall due to wetting and freezing
causes soil to move down slope
what is mudflows?
increase in water content f soil
reduces friction
mud flows over underlying bedrock
mudflows represent a serious threat to life as they can be very fast flowing
what is landslides?
heavy rainfall leads to water in cracks
reducing friction
leads to landslides
as the intact rock moves down the cliff face really quick
what is slump/landslip?
slope is curved
build up of pore water pressure leads to land collapsing under its own weight
what is runoff? what are the two things runoff can do? why can runoff be responsible for increasing pollution in coastal areas
the excess water in the form of overland flow
can erode the cliff or pick up sediment which would be transported in the water by suspension
can be responsible for increasing pollution in coastal areas if it picks up waste or excess chemicals
