Sea Level Change Flashcards
Eustatic change
A global change in sea level due to thermal expansion
Isostatic change
Local changes in sea level resulting from land rising or falling relative to the sw
How much lower we’re sea levels in the last glacial period
110 metres below current levels
Four stage typical sequence of sea level rise
1.climate gets colder, water is stored as snow and ice, eustatic sea level fall
2.weight of ice land subsides, movement is isostatic
3.climate warms, ice melts, replenishes sea levels causes submerging features e.g rias and fjords
4.isostatic readjustment emergent features e,g raised beaches
submergent features
Rias - flooded river valleys and floodplains
Fjords - flooded glacial valleys
Dalmatian coasts- rugged islands running parallel to the coast
Emergent features
Raised beaches - Isostatic recovery
Marine platforms
Predicted sea level rise between 1990-2090
18-59 cm
