SCT (social cognitive theory) Flashcards
who was the SCT developed by?
Bandura
what does the SCT suggest?
suggests behavior is modelled by other members of a group and acquired through observation or imitation based on consequences of a behavior. Behavior is learned from the environment through the processes of modelling and reinforcement. We do not need to experience everything personally in order to learn. We can learn by watching other people.
what is vicarious learning?
learning by performing an action and experiencing the consequences of that action on ourselves or by observing another person’s actions and their consequences or what is called
what are the 4 things needed for effective modeling?
attention
retention
motivation
self-efficacy
what are some other factors that affect the learners motivation to replicate a behavior?
likeability of the model
identification with the model
consistency of the behavior
potential-the individual must feel that he can actually do what the model can do
what are two studies that investigate the SCT?
bandura
Eron
what is the aim of Bandura?
The study was investigating whether children could learn aggressive behavior by watching the behavior of adults.
what were the results of Bandura?
- The children who saw the aggressive model made more aggressive acts than the children who saw the non-aggressive model.
- Boys made more aggressive acts than girls.
- The boys in the aggressive conditions showed more aggression if the model was male.
- The girls in the aggressive conditions also showed more physical aggression if the model was male but more verbal aggression if the model was female.
what is the aim of Eron?
To investigate whether children’s level of aggression would increase over a long period of time when exposed to aggressive acts on TV.
what were the findings of Eron?
The findings indicated that preference for violent TV at the age of 9 was positively correlated with rated aggressiveness at age 19 mostly for boys.
The study supports that preferring to watch violent TV is a cause of aggressive behavior in the long-term.
