brain imaging techniques Flashcards
1
Q
what does MRI stand for?
A
magnetic resonance imaging
2
Q
what does FMRI stand for?
A
functional magnetic resonance imaging
3
Q
how was the brain studied before technology?
A
post mortem studies (not accurate representation of brain)
lobotomies (unethical)
4
Q
what do MRIs do?
A
measure the size of the brain (white and grey matter)
map hydrogen molecules
create 2D or 3D images
5
Q
how do you measure the brain in an MRI?
A
by voxel based morphology- density of grey matter
or
by pixel counting- size of a specific area
6
Q
what do FMRIs do?
A
measures the activity of the brain
they do this by mapping oxygen levels in the brain- more blood- more activation
can produce film (3 seconds)
