Scotland before the war Flashcards
Coal
Coal was a fast growing industry. Its main competition was oil, gas and electricity. A challenge it faced was that mine owners were reluctant to adopt new technology.
Iron and Steel
There were steelwork factories in many places, like Airdrie, Wishaw etc. The Naval arms race with Germany led to a boom in the Iron and Steel industry.
Shipbuilding
1879 world’s first steel hulled ship was launched on the Clyde and orders flooded in.
Fishing
Railways were important to the fishing industry because the growth of the railways allowed fresh fish to be transported across the country.
Textiles
Over 70,000 people in Dundee were employed in the Jute industry. In Paisley, many factories produced cotton and provided thousands of people with jobs.
