Some people belonged to political parties who opposed war. This means that members of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) refused to fight because they felt it was unfair that working men were being killed on the battlefield.

Some soldiers became conscientious objectors after their own experiences at war. This means that many who had experienced the horrors of trench life returned home and refused to go back to the western front, possibly also due to trauma from fighting.

Some people thought it was wrong to fight because Scotland wasn’t being directly threatened. This means that Scotland was not at risk of being attacked, therefore some did not agree with getting involved in war and forcing Scottish people to suffer consequences all to help another country.
