Scoring and Sleep Stage D (p. D24 Flashcards
How long is an epoch?
30 seconds
If two or more stages are found in one epic, which stage should you assign to the epoch?
The stage occupying the greatest portion of the epoch
When is the scoring done?
Between lights out and lights on.
What frequency is the slow-wave activity?
0.5-2 Hz amplitude (height) of 75 uV peak to peak in frontal derivations.
Describe delta waves. ___ Hz
0-3.99 Hz
Describe theta waves. ___ Hz
4-7.99 Hz
Describe alpha waves. ___ Hz
8-13 Hz (Alpha waves are seen often on the test.)
Describe beta waves. ___ Hz
Greater than 13 Hz
Alpha waves may also be called ___ waves.
Berger waves
How do you score stage W?
Contains alpha waves in the occipital area (EOG) and they are very fast.
Eye blinks or eyes open/closed will be seen
When eyes are open, alpha waves are reduced
Alpha waves do not appear until 3 years of age
What is an eye blink? How many Hz?
A vertical eye movement at 0.5-2 Hz in wakefulness.
What is a reading eye movement?
Conjugate eye movements having a slow phase followed by a rapid phase in the opposite direction as the individual reads.
Rapid Eye Movements
Irregular, sharply peaked eye movements with an initial deflection usually lasting less than 500 msec.
At what stage do you see rapid eye movements?
Stage R (REM stage)
What is another sign that REM is occurring?
Muscle tone in the chin is very quiet
