Scientific Tools Flashcards
Qualitative Data
data which is described rather than measured
Example: color, shape, smell, opinions
Presentation Software
computer programs or applications designed to create and deliver visual presentations, typically consisting of slides containing text, images, videos, and other multimedia elements
Example: Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and Prezi
trends
the way one variable changes in response to a change in another variable; increasing, decreasing, and no correlation are typical trends in data
Positive Correlation
a positive relationship between data points on a graph; as one variable increases, so does the other; produces a trend line with a positive slope
Stem-and-Leaf Plot / Stemplot
a plot that splits each data value into a “leaf” (usually the last digit) and a “stem” (the other digits). Stemplots are used for smaller sets of quantitative data. You can easily identify outliers, data clusters, or gaps on a stemplot.
Exponential Decay
a relationship in which the change in y decreases at a rate proportional to its current value
Line Graph
a visual representation of data which shows change over time or in response to a manipulated variable
Spreadsheet
A tabular view of data with columns and rows; the intersection of a column and row is called a cell.
Website
collection of web pages housed under a common domain name that are viewed on an internet browser
Directly Proportional
the relation between two variables such that when one increases by a certain amount, the other increases by a constant, proportional amount
Search Engine
a tool for finding information on the internet using keywords
App
a software application that is designed to perform a specific function for the user and can be utilized for teaching purposes
Double Bar Graph
a visual representation of data which compares values in different categories and groups
Exponential Growth
a relationship in which the change in y increases at a rate proportional to its current value
Categorical Data
data recorded as categories/groups
Histogram
a visual representation of data which compares frequencies of different numeral intervals
Inversely Proportional
the relation between two variables such that when one increases by a certain amount, the other decreases by a constant, proportional amount
Word Processing Software
used to create documents; used for planning, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing written work
Dot Plot
a graph that uses dots to show the frequency counts of a group of data. Dot plots are used for small sets of quantitative data. You can easily identify the mode, the shape or skew of the graph, and potential outliers on a dot plot
Pie Chart
a type of chart in which a circle is divided into sectors that each represent a proportion of the whole; helpful when analyzing the relative distribution of categories
Bar Graph
a visual representation of data which compares values in different categories
Linear Relationship
a relationship with a constant rate of change that creates a straight line when graphed
Blog / Discussion Board
platform for posts about various subjects and comments on the posts
Negative Correlation
a negative relationship between data points on a graph; as one variable decreases, the other variable increases; produces a trend line with a negative slope
