Scientific Process Flashcards
What does discovery do for science?
Describe nature, observe phenomena, make observations
What does hypothesis based inquiry do for science?
Design experiments to test a hypothesis, collect and analyze data
What are the two types of data?
Qualitative and Quantitative
What is qualitative data?
Observations, descriptions, qualities and characteristics
What is quantitative data?
Counts, numbers, measurements, generally organized into tables and graphs and analyzed with statistics
What is science?
Science is a body of knowledge and a process
What is observation in the scientific method?
Action or process of noticing or perceiving something to gain information
What is a research question in the scientific method?
Open ended question based off your initial observations that seeks to obtain information
What is a hypothesis in the scientific method?
Tentative answer or prediction to well-framed question based on your observations/available data; an educated guess
What is the criteria for a good hypothesis?
Must be testable
Must be falsifiable/ can be proven wrong
Does not need to be correct
What is an experiment in the scientific method?
A scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis or demonstrate a known facts
What is an idependent variable?
What you are testing; the one variable that varies amount test groups
What is a dependent variable?
What is measured, what is affected by the independent variable
What is a control variable?
All of the other variables that could be affect the results that are held constant and do not vary among groups
What is a control group?
Baseline for group comparison
