scientific method Flashcards
scientific methods
A method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
hypothesis
A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
controlled experiment
A test where the person conducting the test only changes one variable at a time in order to isolate the results.
variable
Not consistent or having a fixed pattern; liable to change.
control group
An experiment or observation designed to minimize the effects of variables other than the independent variable.
experimental group
The group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested.
step 1 of experimental method
Make observations.
step 2 of experimental method
Form a hypothesis.
step 3 of experimental method
Make a prediction.
step 4 of experimental method
Perform an experiment.
step 5 of experimental method
Analyze the results.
step 6 of experimental method
Draw a conclusion.
meter
The fundamental unit of length in the metric system, equal to 100 centimeters
liter
A metric unit of capacity, formerly defined as the volume of 1 kilogram of water under standard conditions, now equal to 1,000 cubic centimeters.
gram
A metric unit of mass equal to one thousandth of a kilogram.
