Scientific Method Flashcards
What do graphs require?
They require a heading where both of the variables are mentioned
They require headings for the Y axis and the X axis with the units of measurement
Make sure that your headings are underlined
What do diagrams require?
Must always have a heading
Must be in pencil only – with clean, clear lines
Must be 8 – 10 lines
Must be in the middle of the page
Must be in proportion
Labels are normally on the right hand side unless there are lots of labels
Labels are in pen
Label lines in pencil, one underneath the other.
What is a hypothesis?
It is a statement that gives a possible explanation to the question that you are investigating. It is a prediction of what you think will happen.
What is an independent variable?
It is the variable that the scientist chooses to change.
What is a dependant variable?
The dependant variable is the variable that will change depending on the independent variable. It is the variable to be measured in an experiment.
What are controlled variables?
They are the variables in an experiment that are needed to be kept the same for the experiment to be a fair one.
What is apparatus?
Apparatus is the tools needed in an experiment. They are presented in a bulleted list.
What is meant by method?
These are the steps in an experiment. They are presented in a numbered list. They must be in order and each step must begin with a verb.
How must an aim be written?
You must always begin with, “To determine…” Then the goal of the experiment.
What do tables require?
A heading where both variables are mentioned
The independent variable must be on the right
Borders around the columns and rows
The columns need headings that contain the units of measurement
Row labels
Content with no units of measurement
Make sure that your headings are underlined
How must a conclusion be written?
First accept or reject a hypothesis, then explain why.
