Science Week 3 Flashcards
1
Q
Ionic Compounds
A
- made up of positive ions/negative ions in a specific ratio
- electrons lost must equal the electrons gained
- molecule must be neutral and stable
- electrostatic charge keeps the ions together
2
Q
Polyatomic Ion
A
- group of atoms that act like a single entity
E.G:-
Hydroxide OH^-1
Ammonium NH4^+1
3
Q
Naming Ionic Compounds
A
Positive Ion Name (Roman Numeral for those with multiple valency)—>
- Negative Ion name —> polyatomic ions
- Non-metal —> modified to end with -ide
IDE ——> original element (sulfur)
ATE/ITE ——> modified element (sulfate, sulfite)
4
Q
Covalent Bonding
A
- only occurs between non-metals
- electrons stay attached to their own nucleus but also occupies the space in the orbital of another nucleus
5
Q
Naming of Covalent Compounds
