SCIENCE WAVES Flashcards
Wave
a wave is a means of transferring energy from one source to another
Transverse wave
a wave with oscillations perbenduiclear to the direction of energy transfer e.g. elctomagnetic
Longitudinal wave
a wave with oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer e.g. sound waves
Crest
top of a longudila wvae
Trough
bottom of a longtuifla wave
Compression
a region of high pressure due to particles being close together
Rarefaction
region of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are spread apart
Amplitude
the maximum displacement of a point on a wave away from its undisturbed postion
Wavelength
distance between crests
Frequency
the number of waves passing a point each second measured in hertz(Hz)
Period
Wave speed
the distance traveled by a given point on a wave in a given interval of time
Electromagnetic spectrum
visible Light
A small part of the electromagnetic spectrum
-a form of energy
-
Photons
light particles
Compression
a region of high pressure due to particles being close together
Electromagnetic waves
transverse waves that transfer energy from the source of the waves to an absorber
Convection
Particles close to the source gain energy, move faster and further apart. this makes the fluid less dense and it rises.air moves for, areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure creating wind
Conduction
Vibrating molecules collide with other molecules making them vibrate and a chain reaction starts as newly vibrating molecules also hit another molecule
radiation
Heat waves move at the speed of light and can move through space and matter, heat waves have long wavelengths that cause the particles in the matter to vibrate, heat radiation behaves like light when it hits the surface it can be transmitted, reflected or absorbed
examples of longtuiditiam waves
ultrasound
earthquake
tsunami waves
