Science Vocab Ch4 Flashcards
Trait
a characteristic that is inherited
Heredity
the passing of traits from parents to offspring
Genotype
the set of genes that makeup an organism
Phenotype
the observable characteristics of organism’s genotype
Allele
a different from a single gene that controls an inherited characteristic
dominant allele
the allele that hides the effects of another allele
Recessive allele
the allele whose effect is hidden when paired with a dominant
allele.
Purebred
an organism with identical alleles for a particular trait
Hybrid
an organism that has two different alleles for a particular trait
Punnett square
a diagram used to show all the possible combinations of a genetic
cross.
Homozygous
having the presence of the same two alleles for the same gene
Heterozygous-
having the presence of two different alleles for the same gene
Pedigree
a record that shows a pattern of genetic inheritance in a family
Codominance
the condition in which both alleles of a gene are actively expressed
and neither is dominant nor recessive
Incomplete dominance
the condition in which both alleles are partially expressed
in a blended appearance of the trait.
