Science (Tissues) Flashcards
What do cells make up?
-Tissues, then organs, organ system
What are tissues?
What are the 4 primary tissue types?
- Collection of similar cells that group together to preform a specialized function
- Epithelial, connective, muscle, nerve
Epithelial tissue:
Structure?
What does it consist of?
-Consists of layers of cell that LINE and COVER all internal and external body surfaces
Epithelial tissue:
Functions?
- Functions as a protective barrier
- Keeps organs in place
- Separates from other organs or parts
Epithelial tissue:
Examples?
- Outer layer of skin
- Inside of mouth and stomach
- Tissue surrounding body organs
Connective tissue:
Most diverse and ________ of the four types of tissue
What does it do to the structures in the body?
- Abundant
- Bind supports and protects structures in the body
Connective tissue:
Examples?
- Bone
- Cartilage
- Ligaments
- Tendons
- Fat
- Blood
Muscle tissue:
Why is it special?
-It can contract
Muscle tissue: (What does each type do?)
Skeletal?
Smooth?
Cardiac
- Moves bones in your body
- Handles body functions that you cant control consciously
- Found in the heart, pumps blood through the body
Nervous tissue:
What does is contain?
What does it provide?
- Contains cells that receive and transmit messages in the form of electrical impulses
- Provides SENSATION of the internal and external events and integrates sensory info.
Nervous tissue:
What does it make up?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- Nerves
- Also found in parts of sensory organ
- Retina in eye
Nervous tissue:
What does it coordinate?
-Voluntary and involuntary activities and some body processes accomplished by nervous tissue
