Science (Organs) Flashcards
What is an organ?
A structure that contains at least two different types of tissue functioning together for a common purpose
How many major organ systems are in the human body?
9
Digestive system:
1. What is its major role?
Breakdown and absorb nutrients that are necessary for growth and maintenance
Digestive system:
2. What are the major organs? (5)
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines
Circulatory system:
1. What is its major role?
Transport nutrients, gases, hormones and wastes through the body
Circulatory system:
2. What are the major organs? (3)
Heart, blood vessels and the blood
Respiratory system:
1. What is its major role?
Provide gas exchange between the blood and the environment. Primarily oxygen from the atmosphere into the body and C02 is expelled from the body
Respiratory system:
2. What are the major organs? (3)
Nose, trachea and lungs
Lymphatic\Immune system:
1. What is its major role?
To destroy and remove invading microbes and viruses from the body. The lymphatic system also removes fat and excess fluids from the blood
Lymphatic\Immune system:
2. What are the major organs? (6)
Lymph, nodes and vessels, white blood cells, T- and B- cells
Excretory system:
1. What is its major role?
To filter out cellular wastes, toxins and excess water or nutrients from the circulatory system
Excretory system:
2. What are the major organs? (4)
Kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
Nervous system:
1. What is its major role?
To relay electrical signals through the body. The nervous system directs behavior and movement and, along with the endocrine system, controls and physiological process such as digestion, circulation
Nervous system:
2. What are the major organs? (3)
Brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves
Muscular system:
1. What is its major role?
Provide movement. Muscles work in pairs to move limbs and provide mobility. Muscles also control the movement of materials through some organs, such as the stomach and intestine, and the heart and circulatory system
