Science Review Topic 3: Lipids Flashcards
What elements make up lipids?
Carbon, Hydrogen & Oxygen
(More C&H than Oxygen)
What is the Monomer of Lipids?
No real monomer, however there is Fatty Acids/Glycerol in Lipids
What is the similarities between carbohydrates and lipids?
They both serve as a form of energy, They both contain the same elements.
What are some differences between carbohydrates and lipids?
Carbohydrates are quick forms of energy, meant to help quickly while lipids are long form fats. Lipids also contain less oxygen than Carbohydrate molecules.
Give 3 Examples of Lipids
Saturated Fats
Un-Saturated Fats
Trans Fats
Describe the structure of Saturated Fats.
Single bonds, these fats are solid at room temprature.
Describe the structure of Un-Saturated Fats.
One or more double bonds (C=C) between 2 lipid molecules. (liquid)
Ex. C-H-C-H-C=C-H-C-H-C
Describe the structure of Trans Fats.
Trans fats are artificially made, difficult to break down. (UNHEALTHY)
What are the purposes of lipids?
1) Long Term Energy
2) Building Cell membranes
3) Insolation
4) Steroids (messengers)
What is the Formula of Lipids?
CH3(CH2)nCOOH
What are the 4 Types of Lipids
Fats
Phospholipid
Waxes
Sterols
