Science Part 2: The Muscular System Flashcards
What is Myology
The study of the structure, function, and diseases of the muscles
What are muscles
Fibrous tissues that contract, when stimulated by messages carried by the nervous system, to produce movement
What are the functions of the muscular system?
Movement of the body; involvement in functions of other body systems; support of the skeleton; contouring of the body
What are the 2 types of muscle tissue?
Voluntary/Striated & Involuntary/Non-Striated
What type of muscle tissue responds to commands and is regulated by will?
Voluntary or Striated
What type of muscle tissue responds automatically to control various body functions?
Involuntary or Non-striated
The salon professional is primarily concerned with which type of muscles found in the head, face, neck, hands, and arms? Autonomic, voluntary, involuntary, or non-striated?
Voluntary
Muscles affected by massage are generally massaged from the :
Insertion attachment to the origin attachment
Anterior =
in front of
Posterior=
behind or in back of
Superioris=
located above or is larger
Inferioris=
Located below or is smaller
Levator=
lifts up
Depressor=
Draws down or depresses
Dilator=
Opens, enlarges or expands
What are the 3 parts of the muscle?
Origin, belly, & insertion
What is the ‘origin’ part of a muscle?
Nonmoving (fixed) portion, attached to bones or to other fixed muscle
What is the ‘belly’ part of a muscle?
midsection of muscle
What is the ‘insertion’ part of a muscle?
Portion of muscle joined to movable attachments- bones, movable muscles, or skin
5 methods to stimulate muscular tissue:
- massage
- electric current
- temperature (dry or moist heat & cold)
- nerve impulses
- chemicals
What/Where is the frontalis muscle?
Extends from forehead to top of skull; raises eyebrows or draws scalp forward
What/Where is the Occipitalis muscle?
Located at the nape of neck; draws scalp back
What/where is the Auricularis Anterior?
One of the three muscles of the ear that are used to move the auricula- the visible part of the ear. It is in front of the ear
What/where is the Auricularis Superior?
One of the three muscles of the ear that are used to move the auricula- the visible part of the ear. Above the ear.
What/where is the Auricularis Posterior?
One of the three muscles of the ear that are used to move the auricula- the visible part of the ear. Behind the ear.
What/where is the Corrugator muscle?
Located between eyebrows; controls eyebrows, drawing in and
downward
What/where is the Levator Palpebrae Superioris?
Located above the eyelids; raises
eyelid
What/where is the Orbicularis Oculi?
Circles eye socket; closes eyelid
What/where is the Procerus?
Located between eyebrows, across the bridge of the nose; draws brows down; wrinkles area across the bridge of the nose
What/where is the Orbicularis Oris?
Circles mouth; contracts, puckers and wrinkles lips, as in kissing or whistling
What/where is the Quadratus Labii Superiorus?
Consists of 3 parts located above upper lip; raises both nostrils and upper lips, as in expressing distaste; also known as Levator Labii Superioris
What/where is the Quadratus Labii Inferioris?
Located below lower lip; pulls lower lip down or to side, as in expressing sarcasm; also known as Depressor Labii Inferioris
What/where is the Mentalis?
Tip of chin; pushes lower lip up and/or wrinkles chin, as in expressing doubt
What/where is the Risorius?
Corner of mouth; draws mouth up and out as in grinning
What/where is the Caninus?
Located above corners of mouth; raises angle of mouth, as in snarling; also known as Levator Anguli Oris
What/where is the Triangularis?
located below corners of mouth; draws corners of mouth down, as in expressing depression; also known as the Depressor Anguili
What/where is the Zygomaticus?
Major and Minor; located outside corners of mouth, draws mouth up and back, as in laughing
What/where is the Buccinator?
located between jaws and cheek; responsible for compressing cheek to release air outwardly, as in blowing
What are the 2 mastication muscles?
Temporalis and Masseter
What/where is the Temporalis?
Located above and in front of the ear; opens and closes jaw, as in chewing
What/where is the Masseter?
Covers the hinge of the jaw; aids in closing jaw, as in chewing
What/where is the Platysma?
Extends from tip of chin to shoulders and chest; draws lower lip and corner of mouth sideways and down, partially opening mouth, as in surprise or fright
What/where is the Sternocleidomastoideus?
Extends along side of neck from ear to collarbone; causes head to move from side to side and up and down, as in nodding yes or no
What/where is the Trapezius?
Flat, triangular; covers upper and back part of neck and shoulders; aids in drawing head back and elevating shoulder blades
What/where are the Latissimus Dorsi?
Flat, triangular; covers lumbar (lower back) region and lower half of thoracic region; aids in swinging arms
What/where is the Pectoralis Major and Perctoralis Minor?
Extends across front of chest; assist in swinging the arms
What/where is the Serratus Anterior?
Located under the arm helps in lifting the arm and in breathing
What/where is the Deltoid?
Triangle shapes; covers the shoulder; lifts or turns the arm
What/where are the Biceps?
Primary muscle in the front of upper arm; raises forearm, bends elbow and turns palm of the hand down
What/where are the Triceps?
Extends the length of upper arm to the forearm; controls forward movement of forearm
What/where is the Supinator?
Runs parallel to the ulna; turns palm of the hand up
What/where is the Pronator?
Runs across front of lower part of radius and ulna; turns palm of the hand downward and inward
What/where is the Flexor?
Located mid-forearm, on inside of arm; bends wrist and closes fingers
What/where is the Extensor?
Located mid-forearm, on the outside of arm; straightens the finger and wrist
What/where is the Abductor?
Muscle, stretches over fingers; separates fingers
What/where is the Adductor?
Muscle, stretches over fingers; draws fingers together
