Science Human Body Pretest Flashcards
How many bones are in the body?
206
What is the most important organ in the body?
the brain
What is the honeycomb structure?(5)
It is in working bones It is where there is support where there needs to be and holes everywhere else Makes bones protective Keeps bones light Makes bones more powerful
What happens when happens of stress is put on a bone?
Microorganisms add on “liquid bone” that then hardens and strengthens the bone for a short period of time, before it wears away.
What are the two types of bone?
compact bone and spongy bone
Describe compact bone.(3)
Made of tiny tubes
The tubes give bones strength
Made of minerals found in rocks(ca, phosphates, mg)
Describe spongy bone and collagen.(3)
Contains collagen
Collagen is a strong yet flexible material
Collagen makes bones strong by allowing them to bend slightly.
What is the oldest a skeleton can be?
10 years
Describe hinge joint.(1, Ex.)
Move like a door
Ex. Jaws, elbows, knuckles
Describe ball and socket joint.(2, Ex.)
The ball, or end, of one joint goes into the socket, or hole, of another
Full movement with this joint
Ex. Hips
Describe pivot joint.(1, Ex.)
One bone twists within a cup
Ex. Head/neck, the bone where you shake your head to say ‘no.’
What is a ligament?
A strong band of tissue that holds two bones together with out stretching.
What do tendons do?
They anchor muscle to bones.
How are tendons and ligaments different?
Tendons anchor muscle to bones while ligaments attach bones to other bones. Tendons also move and stretch, while ligaments don’t because they are fairly strong.
