Science Final Review extra cards Flashcards
What should you do if a corrosive material spills on you?
Call for help immediately.
Why shouldn’t you come in contact with water if a corrosive material spills on you?
Some corrosive material can react with was and cause worse effects
Describe a material being prepared as a fluid to make it easier to use or transport.
Glass Bottle
What are the properties of fluids?
They must flow and they have no fixed shape
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is made of one type of material
What is a mechanical mixture?
A mixture in which there are two or more materials
What is the “concentration” of a solution?
How much solute is dissolved in the solvent
What factors affect the rate of dissolving?
Stirring
Size of pieces
Temperature
What is viscosity?
It is the friction between the particles
How does the particle model of matter explain viscosity?
There is less friction when a substance is heated up because there is more space between the particles so they can flow over each other more easily
What units are used to measure concentration?
Millilitres
What is solute?
The thing that dissolves in the solvent
What is a solvent?
The thing that makes the solute dissolve
What is density?
The amount of particles per a certain area
Why is hot water less dense than cold water?
Hot water is less dense because it has more spaces in between
What is Pascal’s law?
An enclosed fluids transmits pressure equally in all directions
Describe a technology based on the solubility of a substance
Kool-aid
How does a hydraulic system work?
You push a piston on water and it multiplies force on the second piston
What is an organism?
Any living thing
What is an organ?
A group of tissues put together to perform a specific function
What is the most basic unit of life?
A cell
What are the differences between an animal cell and a plant cell?
A plant cell has a cell wall and a chloroplast
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration
What is osmosis?
The movement of water from high concentration to low concentration
What is the function of an artery?
Carry blood away from the heart
What is the function of a vein?
Carry blood into the heart
What is the function of a capillary?
Connect arteries and veins
Why was the invention of the microscope so important?
People were finally able to see small animalcules
How do binoculars work?
Light goes through two reflective prisms and then to the eyepiece.
