Science End Of Quarter Test Flashcards
`Science
A way of learning about the natural world through observations and logical reasoning; leads to a body of knowledge
Scientific inquiry
The ongoing process of discovery in science; the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanation based on evidence they gather
Scientific theory
A well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations
Scientific law
A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions
Hypothesis
A possible explanation for a set of observations OR answer to a (scientific) question. MUST be testable
Independent variable
What the scientist is changing, what is being measured
Dependent variable
What is being measured or observed, the data collected
Constant variables
What is left untouched throughout the experiment
Control variable
The baseline or the way things are normally done, used to create a baseline
Quantitative data
Data that can be measured or counted
Qualitative data
Data that is described based on
observation, usually involves adjectives
What do you do when your hypothesis doesn’t work out
Go back to the beginning
whats the first step of the scientific method
Observation
What is the second step of the scientific method
Question
What is the third step of the scientific method
Hypothesis
