Science - Chemistry: Important Groups Flashcards
group 1
alkali metals
- react explosively with water
- all elements have 1 valence electron
group 2
alkali earth metals
- turn water alkaline
- commonly found in earth’s crust
- all elements have 2 valence electrons
group 17
halogens
- ‘salt formers’
- react with metal ions to form salts
- have 7 valence electrons
group 18
noble gases
- exist as single atoms
- hardly ever in chemical bonding
- have full valence shell
reactivity of group 1
all highly reactive because they can easily lose their 1 electron
reactivity of group 2
quite high reactivity because only 2 valence electrons
reactivity of group 17
highly reactive because they only need to gain one electron to form a full shell
reactivity of group 18
unreactive/inert because of full outer shell
