Q

What is the way the air travels into your body?

A
  1. Air enters through nose or mouth
  2. Sinuses warm and mositen the air.
  3. The nose, mucus and hair trap dust and germs.
  4. Air passes from the sinus to the back of the throat and into the larynx.
  5. The trachea carries air from the larynx to the lungs.
  6. The trachea leads to two branches called the bronchi that go into the lungs.
  7. In the lungs, the bronchi branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles.
  8. The bronchioles end in the air sacas in the lungs.
  9. Through the air sacs, the oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves the blood.

Q

How do these two systems carry oxygen to our bodies?

A

The respiratory system gets the oxygen as far as the tiny air sacs inside your lungs. The blood picks up the oxygen there and carries it to all the cells in the body.

Q

What two things happen in the air sacs?

A
  1. Oxygen leaves the lungs and enter the blood.
  2. Carbon dioxide leaves the blood and enters the lungs.
The output of one system is the input of the other system.

Q

What happens when you hold your breathe?

A

Several systems work together to make sure you get oxygen. When you hold your breath, carbon dioxide builds up in your body. Your brain senses this and without you making a decision it send a message to the diaphragm and rib muscles telling them to breathe.
