Chapter 10 Study Guide Flashcards
What is a wind turbine?
A wind turbine is a machine that uses wind to produce energy.
How does the speed affect the production of energy?
The faster the wind, the faster the blades will turn, and that will make the generator spin more and make more electricity.
What does a solar panel looks like?
Solar panels look like large sheets of black glass with grids across them.
What kind of energy do solar panels produce?
Solar panels produce solar energy.
What are some examples of non-renewable resources?
Some examples of non-renewable resources are: coal minerals fossil fuel oil
What is the natural resource that nuclear energy requires?
The natural resource that nuclear energy requires is Uranium.
What energy is not available at all times? When is it not available?
Solar energy is not available at all times. It is not available at night and when it’s cloudy.
When do hydroelectric power plants create energy?
Hydroelectric power plants create energy when water is flowing through the dam in large pipes and it spins parts of generators. As they spin, the generator makes electricity.
Why is it better to recycle aluminum than to mine more?
It is better to recycle aluminum than to mine more because recycling it takes less energy than mining more.
What are some examples or renewable resources?
Some examples or renewable resources are: trees water solar energy air soil
What are some advantages of geothermal energy?
Some advantages of geothermal energy are:
* it can make electricity all day and all night (unlike solar energy and wind).
What are some disadvantages of geothermal energy?
Some disadvantages of geothermal energy are:
* the power plants can be built in only a few places in the world were very hot rocks are close to Earth’s surface.
What are some disadvantages of fossil fuels?
Some disadvantages of fossil fuels are:
- the supplies are limited
- it causes air pollution
How are the disadvantages of fossil fuels being resolved?
Many cars are being built so they travel further with less fuel and that causes less air pollution.
How are mineral resources used?
Mineral resources are used for the following:
- iron: for bridges, cars, building, cooking utensils.
- gypsum: used in plaster and paint for homes.
- mica: used in paint.
- gravel: used to make rocks.
