Science: chap 3 & 8 (yr9) Flashcards
What are the basic building blocks of the nervous system
Neurons
What is a neuron
An individual nerve cell
What is the CNS made up of
brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS made up of
all of the neurons and nerve networks throughout the body that lie outside the CNS
The PNS is further divided into which 2 systems
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic Nervous System
What does the Somatic nervous system do
controls voluntary and reflex movement of muscles and receives signals from sense organs
What does the Autonomic nervous system do
controls involuntary bodily functions (digestion, tears)
What 2 systems does the autonomic nervous system divide into
- Sympathetic (fight-or-flight)
- Parasympathetic (rest-and-digest)
What are hormones
chemical messengers sent by the endocrine system
what type of hormone(s) does the pancreas make
-Insulin
-Glucagon
what type of hormone does the adrenal glands made
Adrenaline
what type of hormone do the kidneys make
Erythropoietin
what type of hormone(s) does the Pituitary gland make
-Growth hormone (GH)
-Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
what type of hormone(s) does the testes and ovaries make
-Testosterone
-Oestrogen
what type of hormone does the Thyroid make
Thyroxine
what type of hormone does the pineal make
melatonin
what type of hormone does the parathyroid gland make
parathyroid hormone
What type of hormone does the thymus make
thymosin
What is the function of a: dendrite
sensory receptors that receive stimuli in the case of sensory neurons/neurotransmitters from neighbouring neurons in the case of interneurons or motor neurons
what is the function of a: cell body
Contains most of cell’s organelles (mini organs) including the nucleus
what is the function of a: nucleus
-“control centre” of cell
-contains cell’s genetic material
